Preparing for a therapy dog visit requires more than just compassion for your community and training for your pet. It's crucial to be well-equipped with the right items to ensure a smooth and successful experience for you, your therapy dog, and those your are visiting. Whether you're a seasoned volunteer or new to therapy dog visits, this guide will help you pack the essentials for your therapy dog visits.

1. Your Dog!

First and foremost, don’t forget your therapy dog! Ensure they are well-groomed, comfortable, healthy, and ready to interact with the individuals you will visit. A calm and confident dog will make for a more successful visit.

2. Leash (and a Spare Leash Too!)

A sturdy leash is essential for keeping your dog secure during visits. Make sure to also bring a spare leash, just in case the first one malfunctions. You just might find other uses for it too! I like to use a slip lead as my spare leash because it can get slipped onto pets much more quickly than fumbling for a clip and the D-ring on a collar!

Responsible dog owners always carry poop bags. This is crucial for cleaning up after your dog, especially in public spaces. It shows respect for the environment and the people you’re visiting.

4. Current Vaccination Records

Some facilities may require proof of vaccination before allowing therapy dogs on-site. Keep your dog's vaccination records handy to ensure compliance with facility regulations. Whenever your dog visits the vet, make sure to print out an updated copy of your dog's records to bring along on your next visit.

Hygiene is important in therapy settings. Carry hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes to clean your hands before and after interacting with individuals and their families and for anyone that interacts with your dog to clean their hands as well.

6. Your Dog’s "Trading Card"

Create a simple card that includes your dog’s name and any other fun information you'd like to include. This can help introduce your therapy dog to those you’re visiting, serve as a conversation starter, and bring an extra smile to everyone's day!

Staying hydrated is important for people and pets! Bring a portable water bowl and fresh water for your therapy dog, especially if your visit is longer than expected or on a warm day. Don't forget to bring water for yourself as well!

Leaving behind pet hair can be a common concern at facilities you visit, especially when visiting facilities that require a clean environment. A sticky lint roller can help remove any loose hair from your clothes and help to clean up after your pet to reduce those concerns!

9. Towel for Rainy Days

If the weather isn’t cooperating, bring a towel to dry your dog off after being outside. This will help keep your dog comfortable, prevent messes indoors, and ensure visits are still enjoyable for everyone!

In case of any accidents or spills, having paper towels on hand can help you quickly address any issues that arise during your visit. You may also wish to include other cleaning supplies to clean up any accidental messes from your pet.

11. Brush

Regular grooming is essential for therapy dogs, especially before a visit. Bring a brush to keep your dog looking neat! You'll be ready to remove any last minute tangles or debris from their coat.

12. Treats

Motivational treats can be a great tool during your visit. Use them to reward your dog for good behavior between interactions or at the end of your entire visit.

If you encounter rough or hot surfaces, dog booties can protect your therapy dog’s paws. Booties are essential when providing crisis response for natural disasters to protect your dog from nails and other debris that may be on the ground. Make sure you've introduced them to your pet before they need to wear them on a visit to keep them extra comfortable!

14. Insurance Information

Be prepared for any situation by having your therapy dog’s insurance information handy. This is likely provided by your organization, but you may also have some coverage through your homeowners or renters insurance! Keeping this information handy can be helpful in case of emergencies.

A basic first aid kit for people and pest is a must-have for any therapy dog visit. Include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any medications you or your dog may need.

16. Required Identification from Your Organization

Many therapy dog organizations have specific identification requirements, such as making sure your dog wears a vest, bandana, or tag. Ensure you have these items ready to demonstrate your dog’s status as a therapy animal. In fact, make sure to review your organization's handbook to ensure you're following all of their requirements!

17. Plastic Bags for Wet or Messy Cleanup

In case of any accidents or spills, carry extra plastic shopping or trash bags for easy and discreet cleanup.

18. Volunteer Hours/Mileage Log

Keep track of your volunteer hours and mileage for your records. This is especially important if your organization requires documentation for volunteer activities and can also help you to save a little money when tax season rolls around!

Now that you've assembled everything you need, you'll need an easy way to carry it all with you during your visit. Make sure to choose a bag that is comfortable to wear and can keep your things organized and easy to access!

By packing these essential items for your therapy dog visits, you can ensure a positive experience for both you and your dog. Remember, therapy dog training is an ongoing process that requires patience, consistency, and preparedness. With the right preparation, you and your therapy dog will be ready to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those you visit!
